Lessons

Standard Lessons

The DSA recommend that learners have at least 45 hours of professional tuition, and a further 20 hours of private tuition before taking a practical test. The amount of lessons you will need differs for each individual. The lessons are offered and arranged based on your own requirements, skill level and learning ability, so each course can be adjusted accordingly. Lessons are available in 1 and 2 hour lengths. I would recommend a 2 hour lesson whenever possible, as it will increase your time on the road and accelerate your learning. It allows new topics covered to be consolidated within the lesson rather than spending valuable time on a 1 hour lesson recapping previously covered material.

Refresher Lessons

Refresher driving lessons are available to all qualified drivers, regardless of age or experience, who want to improve their driving skills to drive safely and with confidence. They can help to redevelop and enhance essential driving skills and road awareness. If you are returning to driving after a period of absence or are not fully confident of your abilities then a refresher driving lesson could be of great benefit. The lessons are designed to meet the needs of the individual, so you can concentrate on one particular aspect of your driving or simply choose to improve your general skills.
There is no set amount of hours needed for refresher lessons; it's really down to how confident you are feeling in your own ability. There will be no pressure on you to take further lessons if you don't feel they are necessary and there is no test to be completed.
Areas of training, which is by no means exhaustive, can include:

  • Manoeuvres

  • Night Driving

  • Eco Driving

Motorway Driving Lesson

Having been specifically trained to work in a motorway environment during my Police service, I am fully aware of the possible consequences caused by a minor lapse of concentration or observation and can provide quality information about driving on today’s busy multi-lane road system.
Statistically, motorways are classed as the safest category of road in the UK. However when collisions do occur, the higher speeds usually involve a greater number of vehicles, resulting in more severe injuries.
This intensive 3–hour programme is specifically targeted at motorway driving and driver safety. This lesson is not solely aimed at the new or young driver. In fact, any age group or level of driving experience is welcome. I realise that for many, it may not be necessary to drive on our motorway network for long periods of time and when the occasion arises, the thought can be daunting with the ever increasing volume of traffic.

Elements included within the course are:

  • Identification and use of slip roads

  • Main carriageway entry/exit procedures

  • Effective lane changing and lane discipline procedures

  • Overtaking

  • Dealing with emergency situations

  • Joining and leaving the hard shoulder

  • Large goods and passenger vehicles

If you are a newly qualified driver you may have the opportunity to experience my motorway input as part of the Pass Plus programme.
