Pass Plus

Background

Congratulations!  You have achieved a level of competence required to pass your driving test and you can now experience the freedom and independence that driving can offer.  However, as a newly qualified driver, you are much more vulnerable than you realise.  Statistics show that new drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident within the first two years of passing their test than at any other time throughout their driving career. This is basically down to a lack of driving experience, with a high proportion of accidents occurring during the hours of darkness.

Most drivers become safer by driving more miles and by experiencing a wider variety of driving environments. While many life skills are developed through ‘trial and error,’ the consequences of an error on the road can be fatal. Remember, speed limits are there for a reason!

Drivers who fall into the age range of 17-24 years of age are commonly referred to as young drivers. They comprise a group who will find that when looking to buy a car insurance policy the costs will tend to be substantially higher than many other car users.

Much of the reason for this increased cost is due to young drivers being involved in a relatively high number of all road accidents (around 25%) while making up a very small number of licence holders (about 10%). This higher risk of being involved in a car accident is then represented in the cost of the young driver’s car insurance, since the increased risk of accident involvement means an increased chance of that driver making a claim on their policy.

Your initial driver training will have provided you with a varied range of road and traffic conditions. However, this training often takes place within a familiar area, as there are time constraints and lesson objectives to consider. Pass Plus provides the opportunity to drive out of your local area and extend  your driving experience safely.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a training scheme designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry.

It is  aimed at the new driver  to  develop your skills and knowledge to make you a safer and more competent driver. By further improving your observation, anticipation and planning, you will learn to deal with approaching hazards safely, thereby reducing your risk of being involved in a crash. When you have successfully completed the course, you will be issued with a Certificate of Completion and you may be entitled to discounted motor insurance.

Pass Plus is a six-module training syllabus which covers:-

You have to complete all 6 modules and undertake at least 6 hours of training. This does not necessarily mean six sessions. The number of sessions required will depend on your ability and progress and the amount of time spent on each module will vary according to individual needs. You will not have to take another test – your driving will be continually assessed throughout your training. To gain your certificate your driving needs to demonstrate you have ‘achieved‘,  or ‘exceeded‘ the required skills and knowledge in  each module.

How Much Will It Cost?

The Fife Pass Plus Initiative is a subsidised scheme available to New Drivers who are resident in Fife and offers substantial savings on the cost of the course.
